(BISMARCK, ND) – Chad Oban, Executive Director of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, released the following statement:
“Yet again, North Dakota’s only congressman, Kevin Cramer, has thrown his lot in with a ‘kamikaze caucus’ of Tea Party Republicans. Together, they killed any chance of passing a long-range Farm Bill and now they’ve shut down the federal government.
“The Farm Bill expired at midnight and because Congressman Cramer supported a radical Tea Party amendment that gutted the food assistance program, North Dakota producers no longer have a Farm Bill to rely on. To add further insult to injury, Cramer has now joined other radical Tea Party Republicans in throwing a temper tantrum that has now shut down the federal government. But, in keeping with his standard practice of putting himself ahead of his constituents, Cramer, who already claims that his $174,000 annual salary doesn’t give him much disposable income, has made sure that he will continue to get paid during the shutdown.
“Not all Republicans think like Cramer and his fellow radical Tea Party Republicans. Traditionally reliable Republican supporters such as the Wall Street Journal editorial page, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and former President George W. Bush’s senior political advisor, Karl Rove, have criticized their actions. Sensible Republicans know that this shutdown will hurt middle class families and threatens the stability of the American economy – and all sensible North Dakotans know how important the Farm Bill is to our farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.
“Kevin Cramer has been in Congress for ten months and has nothing to show for it other than displaying an ideological extremism that is out of the mainstream of North Dakota thinking.
“Kevin Cramer is unfit to govern. North Dakotans deserve better.”
