(BISMARCK, ND) – Chad Oban, Executive Director of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, released the following statement on today’s U.S. House vote on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The House voted to cut funding for SNAP. The vote was 217 to 210, with 15 Republicans joining all 195 Democrats in voting no.

“Yet again, by voting to cut $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Congressman Kevin Cramer put his extremist views ahead of farmers, ranchers, children and seniors.

“SNAP is the most successful anti-hunger program in history and has enjoyed bipartisan support for the past 40 years. Despite calls by some moderate Republicans, such as former U.S. Senator Bob Dole, Kevin Cramer and the radical Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives ended 40 years of bipartisan consensus. They also further poisoned the well when it comes to passing a long-term Farm Bill.

“North Dakota has only one member in the U.S. House of Representatives and one of his primary jobs is to deliver a Farm Bill for North Dakota’s producers. By his vote today, Kevin Cramer not only let our state’s farmers and ranchers down, he also let down our children and seniors, and abandoned the cherished American value of taking care of our own.”
